Blog Post 5 part 2

So far my Personal Learning Network ( PLN) consist of my blog from this class and I am connected with a website called TeachersPayTeachers and Pinterest

TeachersPayTeachers
Personal I absolutely love TeachersPayTeacher! It is a website where teacher post and sell their ideas to other teachers. Some of the material is free and some of it you have to pay. However, the material only cost a few dollars and it is well worth the price. It was a great way to share ideas with teachers!

http://teachitwithclass.blogspot.com/p/my-shops.html

Pinterest
Pinterest is a great way of looking up ideas in teaching and other fields. I have even used Pinterest when making lesson plan because there is so much material you can use. Pinterest can even has ideas for arts and craft for decorating your classroom.

During the course of this class I have learnt about many ways in which to make a PLN and how to connect with other who have a PLN!

If I Started my Own Business by Lauren. M

Lauren decided that if she was to own her own business it would be a flower business which i think is pretty cool! She even would make it into an apartment so that she could live there. I commented

http://www.edudemic.com/education-technology-pros-cons/

Pros
Technology in the classroom makes it easier for the teacher to impart knowledge to students. Technology also make the learning process enjoyable for  students.  Two Pros are: (1) Technology as a teaching Aid (2) Easier Accessibility of Information.

Technology as a teaching Aid:
Computer capablilities invite great interest from students. Studies show that teaching aids increase concentration in students and can led to improvement in class attendance. Having technology in the classroom allows the teach to do more in the classroom. With smart bound the student are able to interact and not just sit in their sets.

Easier Accessibility of Information: The internet provides numerous information for students to find all type of knowledge. The internet has gave learning a new dimension. Students can create blogs and talk to students around the world, Skype, make movies, and many more.

Cons
Besides the positives of technology in the classroom it can also Hinder education. One ways education can be hindered are: distraction to students

Distraction:
When I did my observation I noticed how students would lie and say that they were done with their work so that they could use the devises.  Mobile devises such as iPads or tablets can be misuse greatly in the classroom for games, texting, or surfing the web. All of these distract students in the classroom.

Overall I think technology can be very useful in the classroom only if it is use in the proper manner along with teacher supervision

C4T3

For the post I  commented on Quantum Progress, I still find this blog post hard to understand what exactly the writing is discussing. this blog post is about a guest post by Moses Rifkin. Rifkin is a physics teach at the University of Prep in Seattle. He is discussing a unit he is teaching to his senior physics students about privilege , social justice, and institutional racism in physics. I commented:

"   As I read your blog post every week I learn more and more about physic. However physic falls under a topic that is not my favorite, but reading your blog post has become very interesting to me. I can actually understand what all is going.    "

The second post is The Frozen Code by Dan Meyers. Dan Meyers likes to teach. He posted a blog to help solve the bad business Gelato Fiasco doing the cold temperatures. I commented:

"    Hi, I am a student at the University of South Alabama and each week are comment on different blogs. I think it is interesting to do research like you have done. I think the Frozen code would be very helpful.     "

What can we learn about teaching and learning from these teachers?
https://sites.google.com/site/auroraedtech/district-resources

In Brian Crosby Back to the Future, he stated, " Without imagination and creativity, there will be no passion". I very much agree with the statement he made.  Children need to have passion.  When a student has passion he or she is more willing to learn.  Mr. Crosby let student set their own goals, this way the students would be more willing to reach their goal. He believe in active learning.  Crosby wants to empower kids to learn on their own by: collaborate, motivate, active, include, and connect.

Mr. Paul Andersen describes a Blended Learning Cycle is the power of learning which blends online, mobile, and the classroom together. The learning cycle includes the 5 E's
http://smartideas.wikispaces.com/Activity+Four
There are six parts to a Blended learning cycle
  • Question
  • Investigation/ Inquiry
  • Video
  • Elaboration
  • Review
  • Summary Quiz

Sam Pane 4th Grade is one of my favorite video. I love how the teacher Mr. Sam Pane use comics to teach his class about using the internet safely. He describes a good digital citizen as a person who chooses to act safely, respectfully, and with responsibility when you are online. He uses visual presentation as learning.  He let his student create a super hero who could stop you when you are not being safe, respectful, or responsible when online.

Project Based Learning helps to increase student engagement and enhance student learning. In the video the teacher talks about how there is always room for improvement. Some students only do enough work just to be by, instead  of giving their all. The teacher in this high school choose to combine three subject. By doing this it allows more time, deeper learning, and quick feed back. Students claim ownership to their work and by doing this their work will only improve.

Roosevelt Elementary's PBL Program has the parents invoked which is always help. Project Based Learning is a different style of learning. PBL's are based on real world problems and are research based projects. Students who use project based learning learn 21st century skills, become self- motivated, learn how to communicate which teaches them social skills, and more. Project based learning can also involve the community.

C4K Summary for March

Nelson Mandela by Daniel talked about how important Nelson Mandela is. Daniel believes that Nelson Mandela should be apart of black history month. Nelson Mandela play a huge different in Africa and the world. He made South Africa a free united nation. Going to jail for so long made Nelson Mandela a better man. My comment to Daniel post was:
Hi Daniel! I am a student at the University of South Alabama and every week we comment on different student blogs. Overall you did a great job on your blog post. I agree that Nelson Mandela should be a big part of Black History month. I watched his movie and he is a very strong and wise man. "

Job Shadowing by Josh is a blog post that I very much agree with. Josh had the chance to go to a race car track to shadow the people that work there. I think everybody who has an interest in a career should shadow someone who works in their future career. Shadowing someone gives you that one on one look into what it is really like to have a job in your future career. I commented:

I’m a student at the University of South Alabama and every week we comment on different blogs. Overall you did a great job on your post. I love race cars and think it is pretty cool you got to go to a racetrack. I think job shadowing is a great way to get a one on one look into different jobs

Kyle H is the title of the blog by a girl named Samantha. She describes Kyle as being different because he wears two shirt instead of one. She even gives a website on her blog in case you know someone like Kyle who wears two shirts. Even though Kyle wears two shirts she is still his friend. I wrote:

" Hi Samantha! I am a student at the University of South Alabama. You did a great job on your blog post. Your friend Kyle seem to be an interesting person. It’s important to remember that everyone is different, but just because they are different does not make them anything less than amazing! "

Blog Post 10

This week we are to discuss Ms. Cassidy approach to the use of technology in the classroom. In the first video Little Kids...Big Potential Ms. Cassidy focus is to show how her students use technology in different ways. The video shows how the students are excited to use technology. Students use such tools as: blogs, webpages, wikis, videos, Skype, and nintendo DS in the classroom. The video shows how the student love to use technology and it also explain how the students use all of these different tools.

http://www.securedgenetworks.com/industry/k12-education

The video is a conversation between Ms. Cassidy and Dr. Strange. Ms. Cassidy discuss how she got started using technology in the classroom. She touches on a good point about privacy. As a teacher you should use classroom privacy when students write blogs or post pictures. One way of doing this is by telling students to only use their first name and not their last name. Another way of having privacy is when you post a picture of a student change their name or use a different student name. Ms. Cassidy believes that technology is here to stay and it's not going anywhere. She encourage teacher to have a while knowledge of technology and to keep up with all the different tools that come with it, and for future teacher to develop their own personal learning network.  Ms. Cassidy encourage teacher to find what works for them when they are making personal learning networks. In the last video Ms.Cassidy answer some questions from students. The student had some good questions. One student asked how often do her student blog? Her response was that it depends on the group size. Some students can blog from at home and sometimes the class will blog together. Another student asked about student copying from other student blogs. Ms. Cassidy thinks that student should be creative when making their blog.

Project #9 Video Book Commentary

Blog Post 9

The question " What can teachers and students teach us about Project Base Learning? " has numerous answers. Project Base Learning( PBL) has been very successful.  PBL is very successful with help students to learn. Most of these videos/ blogs state the same message which is PBL will help you in the long run in the workplace.
hen
The Seven Essentials for Project Based Learning listed seven facts that are useful w working on a project. The seven are:

  • Need To Know
    • Entry event which engages the students with and interesting and initate question
  • Driving Question
    • Brainstorming " capture the heart of the question"
  • Student voice and choice
    • The more a students include his or her voice the better the project
  • 21st Century Skills
    • Projects can give students the opportunities to build 21st century skills such as communication, technology, and collaboration. All of which would help in the workplace
  • Inquiry and Innovation
    • Project work in more meaningful when students conduct real inquiry meaning students follow a trail to their own question and discovery research to the answer which can lead to new ideal,  new questions, and their own conclusion.
  • Feedback and Revision
    • According to Lamer and Mergendoller, " Students need to learn that most people's first attempts don't result in high quality and that revision is a frequent feature of  real-world work."
  • A Publicly Presented Product
    • Schoolwork is more meaningful when students present it to an audience instead of just the teacher and classmates. A student will care more about the presentation of their work if they have to show is to an audience.
Project Based Learning for Teachers defines PBL's as students taking control of their learning. Student work over a long period of time to answer a question and at the end of the project the students share their work with everyone.

 Project based Learning is :
  1. Inquiry based
  2. Open ended
  3. Problem Solving
  4. Personalized
The four C's of Project Based Learning are:

  1. Collaboration Skills
  2. Communication Skills
  3. Critical Thinking Skills
  4. Career and Life Skills
PBL: What Motivates Students Today is a good video to give first time teacher an ideal of what students like that will motivate them to do good in school. Some of the students in the video said they like when the teacher would give them candy, sticker, or just cool school supplies for being good in class. I remember when I was in school I would try to be extra good so that at the end of the day or week I could get a goody out of the goody bag. Also students like when teach give them compliments. Give a students compliments when they do good on a test motivates the student to do good on the next test or quiz. What motivates some students to do good in school is when they think about their future career and college. Students know that in oder to succeed and have a good position in your future career you need to make good grade. For younger students, what motivates them to do good in school is that they know that if they do not make good grade their parents will not let them do the fun activities they want to play such as sports, or getting a new toy, or even taking away toys.

Project Based Learning in P.E.  describes how PBL can be used in any subject. This blog shows how students can teach other students the importance of physical activity out side of school. Having a healthy live consist of both staying physically fit and active.  It even includes the physical education standards. This blog shows how PBL and can help not just students but the community.

https://21centuryedtech.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/pbl2.jpgTen sites Supporting Digital Classroom Collaboration in Project Based Learning are tools used to exchange the Project Based Learning experience. These site include collaboration and communication from etcher to student, student to student, and student to experts.
The ten website are:
  1. Titan Pad
  2. Wall Wisher
  3. Coarkboardme
  4. Google Docs
  5. Microsoft Live
  6. Today's Meet
  7. Linoit
  8. Skype in Education
  9. Quick Screen Share

Blog Post 8

http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/books/blog/2008/07/Randy Pausch's Last Lecture was a great lecture. Randy Pausch lecture was very interesting. He taught at Carnegie Mellon University. In his lecture Rand main focus is childhood dreams. He states " Anything is possible. that is something we should not lose sight of. The inspiration and permission to dream is huge." I strongly agree that anything is possible. This is a great ideal to teach students in the classroom that anything is possible. Randy also makes a comment stating " You have to get the fundamentals down, otherwise all the fancy stuff isn't going to work." As a future teacher this statement really stands out to me. In school you have to learn the basic before you can learn anything else.

C4T #3 and 4

For my comment of teachers 3 and 4 I had Teaching Social Justice in the Physics Classroom. This comment for teacher was a little hard for me to understand. The main focus of the blog was about Physics which is science which is a subject that I do not like to much. As I read the blog I was often confused on what the author was discussing. The main idea of the blog was Teaching Social Justice in the Physics Classroom. The blog  has 4 parts. Even though I was a little unclear on the man idea it was still interesting to read.
I commented:

  • 1st comment:
Hi I am a student at the University of South Alabama. this article is a little confusing when I first started to read it. However the more I read the more I could understand it. The article I is very informative and gives good ideals about learning.

  • 2nd comment:

Great Post! It is very organized and clear. I enjoyed reading the information. Physics is a little confusing to me but I did learn something out of your post!

Blog Post #7

Technology has become very common among all ages. students in kindergarden are even using technology in the classroom. Using iMovies and the Alabama Virtual Library in kindergarden help prepare students. In the kindergarden classroom the teacher set up stations were students get the chance to make an iMovie( book trailer). Although it may seem like kindergarden student could understand technology, it only takes maybe two example to show them the work before they know how to do it on their own. The Alabama Virtual Library ( AVL) is a great free source to teach students basic researching skills.

In the video We All Become Learners, Mrs. Bennett states " teachers teach students, students teach students, and students teach us." By saying that Mrs. Bennett is stating that everyone becomes a teacher and a learner at the same time. Ipads in the classroom can be very useful. In Chicago the schools find them very useful and improve the grades of students. Technology make students interested. Technology is mainly taking control of students with t.v, texting, games, and so on. Having technology in the schools will make student interested in learning. iPads in the classroom becomes a virtual field trip to students.

http://www.sgvcue.org/10_11events/cb_online_ipads.html

The video Top 10 reasons to use technology in education names a few reason why schools use technology. the video had some really good point such as " Student Love it." Students love play with technology such as gameboys, xbox, and watching t.v. These are all thing kids like to do now. By bringing technology in the classroom you gain interest of the student. Gaining the interest of student make them want to learn more.

Project Based Learning Part 1 really shined some light on what PBL is. PBL is very common. PBL is the use of project to help students learn. PBL is a not only a means to show how students have achieved what you wanted them to, but it's for the students to actually learn something.  When coming up with a project, you should keep in mind to create a project that will have everything the students will need to know in the project. According to Anthony Capps, to strive a PBL must have or do; involve the audience, include student interest, driven content, and an authentic audience.  In
Project Based Learning Part 2 Mr. Capps points are that not every project will go as planned. He even  gives an example to a situtation where a parent had a problem with the project and as a teacher you have to respect the wishes of the parents.

Icurio is something I can see myself using in the classroom. Icurio is a safe online tool use for searches in the classroom. Students can search text, audio, and videos. Icurio has the capability of storage. When students do not finish their work or find something they would like to hold on to they can place it in storage.  Icurio is also a way of online organization. There is also a directory for historical features which allow students to look up again thing and get information.

http://www.gulllakecs.org/Page/348

Discovery Ed is a great tool for the classroom. Discovery ed use videos to bring learning to life. Discovery ed can bring experts into the classroom about different subjects, especially in the subjects of science and history. This tool is good for those who are visual learners.

Blog Post #5

PLN is short hand for Personal Learning Networks. According to Dr. Strange a PLN is, " is those people, places, organizations, and activities which enable you to learn." PLN provide many of opportunities to learn. A few examples of PLN's that can help you learn to are Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, and blogs. You start off establishing a PLN by finding a topic are you interested in. Next you form question about the topic you are looking up. This is where Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, and blogs come in hand. You can communicate and follow different blogs to find out more re-search/ information. Dr. strange states that when you are looking/ making a PLN, " you are more detective than student, A LOT  more like a detective." Personal learning networks help teachers to find and share source, information, and ideals. I have already started building my own personal learning network thank to EDM 310. The blog we created is a great way to share different information and ideals.

C4K Summary

Winter Weather by Alondra was very interesting to read. I found it to be cool that is snows where she lives. I could really relate to her.  Just like her I do not like winter weather that much, and I love decorating the Christmas tree with my family as well.

I commented:
"Hi Alondra
My name is Shernell Mabien, I am a student at the University of South Alabama. For one of my classes we go on different students blogs and make comments on their blog. Overall you did a great job on your blog. I think it is pretty cool that it snows in your town. I am from the deep south and it does not snow where I live.
P.S I have a cousin that has the same name you do !"

For the C4k assignment I was assigned to a student from New Jersey in the 8th Grade in Ms. Leatherwood Class. The blog post I read was titled Having a Best Friend is Important by Carly. In the blog post Carly mention some key components of having a best friend, which are:

  • Comfort
  • Connection
  • Unconditional Support
  • Self-esteem
  • Honest Opinions

I commented:
Hi Carly, I am Shernell ! I am a student at the University of South Alabama, located in Mobile Alabama. I really enjoyed reading your blog post. The special bonds you listed are the same ones I have with my best friend. Sometimes we can just look at each other and know what the other one is thinking. I liked how you organized your blog post. Having an organize blog post makes it easy to follow. When you have a best friend, someone you know that has that special connection with you is very special to have. "

Carly had some very important key point about having a best friend in her blog. I could even relate to some of the thing she mentioned. I know when I am with my best friend it;s like sometimes we can read each others mind. Carly really describes the true diction of a best friend in her blog post.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Eden was very interesting to read. He describes a book named The Invention of Hugo Cabret. The book seems to be about magic. Eden does a good job describing the book, After I read his blog post it made me want to read the book. I commented
"Hi, I am a student at the university of South Alabama. In one of my classes we comment on different blog every week. I have never read The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Is seems to be a very interesting book. You did a great job describing the book and characters. After reading your blog I am interested in know what an automaton is. Over all you did a good job on your blog."

For the Momments that Matter C4K I commented on a blog by Andrea. She wrote about the singer and fashion designer Rhiana. Andrea is really inspired by Rhiana. Many of Rhiana fans look up to her for her many accomplishments and because of her beauty. I commented
"Great post Andrea!
I attend the University of South Alabama, and for one of my classes we comment on different blogs. I agree that Rhiana does not give up one being a good person regardless of her surrounding. She worked work to be come a very successful singer. "

C4T 1

For C4T #1 and #2 I was assigned  "For the Love of Learning" by Joe Bower.

The first blog I commented on was titled A Teacher that Quit is used to Show that Teachers Stay. Reading this blog really caught my attention. the blog mentions that 40-50 percent of teachers quit in their first 5 years of teaching. The blog talks about if the reason of teachers quit is because of the low pay or that etchers are treated badly. My comment to the blog was

"I am a student at the University of South Alabama, and I am an elementary education major. Reading this article is very shocking. I did not know that 1 in 4 teachers quit in their first four years of teaching. I am aware that teachers are not paid as much as other occupations. However it makes me wonder why is it that between 40-50 percent of teachers quit; is it because teaching was not their true calling or is it another reason?"

The second blog I commented on was titled 3 Big Ideals about Teacher Workload. In the blog the writer talks about three ideals he would like people to know about teaching which are:

  1.  I meet all my students' need only if some children don't show up
  2. My working conditions are my students' learning conditions
  3. Teachers are so busy teaching they don't have time and effort to learn how to be better teacher
My comment for this blog was:

"Your article is very interesting. The list you gave in the article describes a lot of student and what they are faced with in day to day life. When you have students and they all have different situations you are not teaching just one student. You are teaching to different students who are facing something in life different from the student sitting next to him or her."

Search Engine Project #15

The search engines I chose were: WolframAlpha,  Aol, Bing,  ChaCha,Yahoo,Youtube, Duck Duck GO, and  Merriam-Webster. All of these source provide viewers with free assess to look up information.

WolframAlpha provides many different types of information such as: geography, education, health, chemistry, finance, sports, computer systems, data, and much more. This search engine has the capability to help with mathematical problem which is helpful to all. WolframAlpha would be a very helpful website for student from the grade level kindergarden all the up to college students.

AOL stands for America online. The website it true to its name. AOL is the 4th largest online search engine in the U.S. It has more than 200 millions monthly consumers. This website is more than a search engine, it has the daily news, weather, and headlines all in one. This search engine is usefully when you need to look something up or, if we are looking to see what is going on in the world AOL is the place to look.

Bing is one of my favorite search engines. Bing is owned by Microsoft. When searching for anything on bing you will get lost of options to choose from. Bing provide the information, images connected to the information, the location,  any new that there might be on the information, and videos.

ChaCha is a question and ask search engine. It is a quick and easy way for you to get the answers to and question you might have on any topic. I personally like ChaCha because when ever I can not think of an answer to a question in my mind I can find it on ChaCha. However, even though ChaCha is a good search engine I would not use it if I was looking up information on a research paper or project.

Yahoo is a very well know and common website to many. Yahoo reminds me of AOL because they both provide many of the same opinions. On yahoo there is so much information at your finger tips. The homepage of yahoo has so many links to today news, weather, travel, technology, there is even a little comic strip on the homepage. Yahoo reminds me of a newspaper expect that its on online. Yahoo also provide a search bar to look up any information that you are looking too.

DuckDuckGO is a search engine that is a little more private than other search engines, and has less clutter than other as well. I really liked how the website give you a tour of what all the website has to offers. DuckDuckGo is a simple search engine and it is community driven.

Youtube is one of my favorite search engines. Youtube is also a very common search engine. Unlike other search engines youtube is a video base website. Even though there are only videos on the website it is still very useful. As a future educator you can find all types of videos about teaching and video that can help you about lesson planning and how to improve classroom skills. Youtube is also helpful because if your are looking to find a way to do something such as arts and creates, you can probably for the most part find it on youtube. Youtube is also a great place to start a blog and post your videos.

Merriam-Webser is a very helpful search engine. Me personally when I do not know what a word mean it is helpful to go on a online dictionary to find the meaning. People really do not carry paper back dictionary anymore. Merriam-Webster is very convenient for looking up a word while you are on the go. It has been very helpful to me. The website also offer vocabulary words. When you look up a word it not only gives you the definition, but it also tell you how to annunciate the words, give you examples of how to use the word, and you can click on a button and the computer will say the words for you.

Blog Post #4

I chose to answer the questions" What do we need to know about asking questions to be an effective teacher?" by looking over the article, The Right Way to Ask Questions in the Classroom  by Ben Johnson . One topic the author points out is that teachers do not know everything. Many students are mis-lead by thinking that just because he or she is a teacher they know everything. Ben Johnson believe that teachers should not assume that all students understand the lesson. Teacher generally ask after each lesson, "does everyone understand the lesson?" Normally most students do not answer or either give an answer they know the teacher wants to hear which is yes. However, when teachers ask a question is can be to board and is not specific enough. By reading the article you learn a few ways to see if students understand and is paying attention to the lesson. To do so the teacher can ask a question and wait a few seconds for the students to think of an answer then, randomly call on a student to give their answer.

I also chose the article Three Ways to Ask Better Questions by Maryellen Weimer.  In the article Weimer remands three action to improve questions.

  • Prepare Questions
  • Play with Question
  • Preserve Good Questions
When planning out a lesson it would be helpful to plan out the questions you would like to ask the students. Pre-planning question helps keep the teacher from just coming up with a question in the middle of the lesson that is not clear and can confuse students. Making questions clear help you to decide rather the question is a good question to ask and it also helps you to see when it is a good time to ask the question.
Playing with a question gives students time to think about what is being asked of them, and to write the question down in their note for study purposes. When students play around with a question they are able to think deeply into the question and come up with different techniques on how to answer the question.
Preserving a good question means instead of just answering the question on spot you can waiting to find out more about the question. In the article Weimer talks about how you can take the answer sthat students give you about a question and turn the question into a more effective question than what it was before.

Blog Post 3

There are many ways to provide meaningful feedback to your peers. One of the best way to give meaningful feedback is to give the writer compliments of what the writer did well on, tell the writer what you like about their paper. Making suggestion to the the writer about their paper if also helpful. When giving a writer feedback the editor should not just tell the writer what he or she did wrong, but the editor should give corrections. Even when giving correction the editor should stay positive. When making suggestions the editor should include examples such as; word choice, organization, sentence structure, the topic, details, and so on.When providing feedback the editor should be very specific by letting the writer know what they have made a mistake on.
There are mistakes that an editor and as the writer  can make while critiquing and taking critcism from their peers. Most peer reviews are with partners. As a editor be carefully not to be picky about how you would like to see the paper instead of what the actually writer wants the paper to say. Providing meaningful feedback does not just mean telling the writer that he or she did something wrong. As a peer editor you should provide the writer with corrections and examples of what can make their paper or work better. Even the writer whose paper is being edited by their peer plays a role in the editing process. Their role is to be interested in what going on and not have an attitude or not care what the editor is saying. A Meaningful feedback include both the editor and the writer not just the editor.

Mr. Dancealot
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k8aeDUC9XQ

While watching Mr. Dancealot I found the central message to be that in order for students to learn, as a teacher you can not just teach from a book. Students can learn more when they practice  and are engaged in the lesson. The author makes the case for this conclusion by showing the end results of how the students were un-able to preform the dances due to the lack of practice and interaction while in class. I agree with his conclusion that if you do not engage students in a lesson or interact with students in a lesson, when it is time to perform the actual task the students will not be able to do so effectively.

Teaching in the 21st Century
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwM4ieFOotA
  • A teacher's role in the life of students
    • Information can be found anywhere
      • Anywhere
      • On anything
      • Anytime
      • There are no limits to the amount of information
  • Teacher are no longer the main source of Knowledge
    • We are filters
      • Teachers show students how to use other sources such as Google, blogs, Wikipedia, Youtube and more
  • When creating a lesson
    • Be Relevant, Engaging, and Challenging
      • Students do not need to be entertained but instead engaged
My feeling towards the changes in teaching that Robert points out is how teaching is changing for the better. There are many different new ways of teaching being created everyday, and it gives teacher more back ground and more sources to explore about learning. The changes in teaching will affect educator in a way that is helpful to students. As a future educator the changes in technology in the schools will help to improve our knowledge as educators on learning the the different ways we can engage students in learning.

The Networked Student
My reaction to the this video is yes in the 21st century student will probably end up doing such thing that where presented in the video. However, there is still a need for a teacher. Like the video states the teacher is there to help the student to first understand what he or she is doing. The teacher is there to show the student the correct and proper way of doing his blogs, to address others experts, and manage  his work, and to show the student how to tell the difference between good and bad information.

Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts
http://www.edutopia.org/digital-generation-teachers-vicki-davis-video

The thesis in the video Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts is to empower students with learning. The teacher makes a comment saying " not all student can learn from paper and pencil." I find this to be true. Students learn in different ways, and that teacher do not always know everything sometimes it is okay for the student to teach the teacher in some cases. The teacher makes a good point by show how students can learn more with communicating with other students around the world.

Who's Ahead in the Learning Race
http://vimeo.com/86432548

The answer to the title of the video, Who's Ahead in the Learning Race would be elementary students. By watching the video Dr. Strange made, he compared elementary students to grad and undergrad students in college. Elementary students where able to do more technology than college students. The elementary students had just got brand new MacBooks two days ago and were able to work with the MacBooks doing different types of projects. The students were using blogs, making I-videos, and many more. Speaking as a undergrad I just got my first MacBook and I am still learning how to use it.  As future educators we need to catch up with the technology in the 21st century. Students in elementary school already know more about technology than there future teachers.

Flipping the Classroom
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KWqw_7Ib1o

Flipping the classroom is very new to me. Before this video I had never heard of flipping the classroom. Taking this approach seem very affective in the learning process. Having student look at the material before the actual lesson is taught will make the lesson more informative. Student would already have somewhat of a knowledge of what the teacher will discuss in class, the student can come prepared with questions and a ideal of the topic, the students would most likely be more interested in what the teacher is teaching since they have already taken a look at the material.

Blog Post #1

Coming into EDM 310 I must say that I am nervous. Heading into EDM 310 I have heard from many about the enormous work load. The work load, working with computers, and the different assignments make me very nervous. I just received my first Macbook and is hard trying to learn it which doesn't help. My major fear is falling behind in my class work and doing the computer assignment such as making videos. I'm not really a computer person, I only know how to do the basics. I have not ran across any other classes that can compare to this class other than Art class in which we did class online forums. The most difficult part of this class I think will be writing because it takes me a while to think about stuff when I write and also staying on top of my work. I try my best to stay organized I actually like being organized but it will still be something I will have to stay on top and work on this semester. The questions that I will have the most of in this class probably won't start until we get more detailed into the work load, but I know a hand load if not more will be on how do I do something on my laptop.

Hi, I'm Shernell Mabien. Iam the youngest of three, I have a Brother who is 27, and a sister who is 24. I grew up in Satsuma Alabama which is just a few minutes north of Mobile. I just became an auntie on November 11, 2014 to a little girl named Madison. I am the mother to a puppy Payton who is 4 years old. I attend school in Mobile. While in middle school which started from 4th grade to 8th grade I got braces my 4th grade year and had them for nine years. I miss having them very much! In high school I was in the band and I played the flute and piccolo, which is a smaller version of a flute. I really enjoyed being in the band because besides playing at football games we also marched in parades during Mardi Gras. My major here at South is Elementary Education.

My favorite thing to do is go shopping. Shopping is like a way for me to relax and chill. I love dressing up for a nice relaxing day of shopping at different malls. Destin Florida is one of my favorite because it's so peaceful and I love the view of the water. I never really shop by myself I go shopping with my mother because it a way for us to bond, however ever so often I will shop by myself.

My passion are kids. I have worked in many summer programs with children, I babysit a six year old, and I tutor. Being around children being me joy. I also have a very strong passion in math. Math is my favorite subject I love the challenge of solving different math problems. My passion of arts and craft is a passion and a hobby. Doing arts and craft is my get away from everything.

I choose to enter the field of education but even when I was younger I wanted to be a teacher, but also because I feel like the learning of a children start not only at home but in the classroom. Teachers can play a major role in influencing students. I know my kindergarden teacher played a major role in the reason why I want to be a teacher. The responsibility  of teacher or not only to teach and help make students a better person, but we should be a good role model for your students. A educators work in the 21st century is much different from when I was in elementary school. With all of the different ties of technology educators have to know how to work smart board and other new technology that is now being used in school.
